The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
